Ask For Advice, Not Permission

The team at Buffer, inspired by Dennis Bakke’s book The Decision Maker, have instituted a bottom-up decision-making setup. The approach turns traditional management on its head by granting decision power to those that are closest to the problem.

The Buffer crew is divided into six product teams, each of which goes through a four-step process to release something new: Growth, Research, Product, and Tech. There’s one person on each team designated to completely independently address each of those areas. How are they kept in check and held accountable? By gathering advice.
